The Disney Wilderness Preserve is 11,500 acres that show what cooperation, innovative thinking and perseverance will accomplish in sustainable development and conservation management. The preserve was once a cattle ranch that was part of the Greater Everglades watershed, and in the early 1990s, extensive residential and commercial development was planned for the land. This would have destroyed the wetlands and the habitat for endangered wildlife and plants. But through the determined efforts of organizations and individuals, the preserve is now an essential part of the Everglades ecosystem with 1,000 or more species of animals and plants and 3,500 acres of restored wetlands.
